"Leviathan Falls" by James S. A. Corey

Review by Borodutch

It has been an eventful year for my fiction reading. I finally finished The Expanse series. I think I get it now: the books focused more on humanity than I liked. Even after reading the last book, I still have many questions. It was probably intended as the aliens had to be something mysterious right until and after the end. The characters in the book also haven't grasped the whole picture — so how can we?

Even though I'm sad I haven't gotten all the answers, I'm glad the series is over. The ending is satisfying, yet the authors had to insert a "happy ending" in the epilogue. I would rather have something from The Wayward Pines, so we still have hope but no idea what happened later.

I wanted more aliens and less humans, akin to Remembrance of Earth's Past. But even with this limited amount of action, I'm finally satisfied—not satiated—with the aliens. How can you drop the concept of conscious light right after introducing it?

Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed The Expanse series. It's not Liu Cixin's level of enjoyment, but I wouldn't want the hours I spent with the main characters back. Similarly to how I got tired of Asimov, I'm tired of Corey.

Except, there's one more short story.
